The Veldt in Sevilla

I am aware that any event’s chronicle must be done as soon as possible in order to prevent the expiry of the information. But in this case I am going to make an exception, because I am still searching for the words to express what happened at the concert of the American band, The Veldt, in the Hollander Hall of Seville.

It could be summarised by saying that they blend the best of rhythm and blues and soul tradition with the 21st century sounds, and we would not be mistaken. But we would be guilty of simplicity, because The Veldt is much more than that.

In this world full of tags, they are usually described as shoegaze and dreampop. But what we were able to see is that the versatile and masterful drums of Marvin Levi create unbelievable beats that grant support to the dreamlike ambience caused by the alternation of Dann Chavis’ guitars with Hayato Nakao’s bass. Upon them floats the feeling that conveys Daniel Chavis’ voice modulation and intensity, an authentic minstrel of the present.

With these tools, they keep on unfolding a repertoire composed of good songs, at the same time soft and breath-taking, full of turns and beautiful melodies, which just professional musicians can perform at the level that they deserve. A special moment was lived when Marie Cochrane came on stage to sing the duet of Sanctified.

Summing up, this is a half and hour live performance that takes place in one second and hooks the spectator from the start. In this time they develop the themes of their last EP up to date, The Shocking Fuzz of Your Electric Fur, and they anticipate others that will be included in Resurrection Hymns, the LP that will come into being in a few months.

These kind of concerts are appreciated. Concerts where the word independence, much reviled and devalued at present, recovers its whole meaning and makes us believe once again in something that the small recording companies achieved. Where, nearly a century ago, a few kamikazes ensured the survival of such profound music as jazz, blues, gospel or country.
