Alfonsina, who considered herself a man within a woman's body, suffered marginalization at a time, early 20th century, when a transgender person was not only not understood but was punished.
Alfonsina y el mar is a zamba (Argentine national dance) composed by the pianist Ariel Ramírez and the writer Félix Luna. It was first published on the Mercedes Sosa album, Mujeres argentinas (1969).
